Taking a Proactive Approach to Conflict since 1993
For over 30 years Space Training has provided people with the tools to more effectively manage their own emotional state, work with people who present behaviours that are challenging and find ways to calm situations when people who receive services are distressed, frustrated or angry.
We have two conflict awareness and response training programmes. Our one day programme provides insight into the reasons why conflict can occur and provides the practical tools to de-escalate potentially volatile situations. Our two day programme incorporates the content from the one day programme and builds upon it with physical responses. These responses enable participants to improve their personal safety through improved spatial awareness and positioning along with movement and release (breakaway) techniques.
Our content can be adapted to meet the specific needs of your team. We have successfully delivered our programmes to tens of thousands of participants in roles as diverse as: support workers, carers, foster carers, social workers, trading standards officers, reception staff, hoteliers, office administrators, finance officers, housing officers and teachers.
Our goal is to deliver a training experience which is stimulating, practical, positive and outcome-focused. We will therefore work with you to:

Our Approach To Training
Our training encourages participants to think about their own behaviours and emotional triggers. We provide a safe environment for participants to think about their own beliefs, values, attitudes and practices and reflect upon ways to create positive change.
All of our physical intervention techniques are unique to Space Training, and have been independently risk assessed. This provides you with the peace of mind that the risk to staff and those who access services are minimised as much as possible.

What Makes Us Different?
When considering 'challenging behaviour' many training providers focus on the person in receipt of services as the source of the problem, often resulting in solutions which almost exclusively focus upon making attempts to control a person's behaviour. What we've found is that there is a very fine line between de-escalating a situation and 'silencing' a person. As most conflict results from unmet needs, merely silencing an individual does little to resolve the underlying issues; as a result conflict become more frequent, and often more severe.
In addition to looking at how to resolve a situation in the moment, we are also concerned with uncovering the underlying issues; we encourage participants to look at all aspects of a situation. We seek to differentiate between causes and symptoms and believe that aggression presented by people who access services is often symptomatic of other issues i.e. unmet human needs, inflexible services, unhelpful attitudes or even adversarial workplace cultures. Our unique model, A Proactive Approach to Conflict (APATC) helps participants to both manage conflict in the moment, but also encourages us to consider and seek to address the root causes of conflict.
When addressing the management of conflict we start with the way that the member of staff manages their own emotional state and conduct. Our programmes encourage participants to explore their attitudes around work-related issues, and to examine their responses. We look at positive and negative responses to stress and fear and methods to reduce stress and use fear to empower ourselves and heighten our awareness.
Although we acknowledge that situations may occur where a physical response is necessary, our training is based on the belief that physical interventions are often detrimental to relationships, and can make situations worse. We therefore equip participants with the tools to reduce the likelihood of interactions entering the physical realm; just as it's important to know how to defuse a situation, it's also important to know when to leave.
